The best-known dairy here was the Dickinson Creamery, located at 25 Third Avenue East, just north of Villard. It was purchased in about 1916 from a group of farmers by Chris Jensen. Jensen's family lived above the creamery and also shipped turkeys all over the country.
In late August 1917, this plant was damaged by a fire which originated at the nearby Wolf Hotel at 234 East Villard. It was rebuilt and sold to Hoy Russell of Mandan and other owners about 1925.
This company was known both as Dickinson Ice Cream and Butter Company and as the Dickinson Creamery Co. In May, 1931, this plant got its first pasteurization equipment. This is the same plant that Cloverdale Foods later purchased. In 1965 its name was changed to Cloverdale and in 1972-73 extensive remodeling was done on the building, still located on Third Avenue East. Hoy Russell's grandson was at this time executive vice president of the company.
By 1973 the company had 51 stockholders and had switched from making mostly ice cream and butter products to a majority of milk products. Poultry had been dropped in 1950.
In the mid-1970s, the creamery disassociated from Cloverdale and was known as Western Dairies. The company went bankrupt in 1979.
