Transcription

The first civilian government in what is now Stark County was that of the "Tom Holmes Expedition," an immigrant train which traveled under the protection of General Sully in 1864. This civilian contingent consisted of 123 covered wagons drawn by ox-teams, with about 200 men, women and children. The wagons were organized into six divisions, each with a wagon-master. A captain general superintended the entire train, aided by a court to try any cases that might arise, a sheriff, a postmaster and a chaplain. Miscreants convicted of pilfering provisions were placarded with THIEF signs, while the regimental band played the "Rogue's March."

This is Bicentennial Story No. 9, prepared by Father Louis Pfaller, for the Stark County Historical Society.
