Transcription

On July 18, 1864, General Sully sat astride his dappled grey horse and addressed the 200 immigrants camped at Fort Rice:

Gentlemen, I am damn sorry you are here, but as long as you are, I will do the best I can to protect you. Tomorrow morning at two o'clock I will leave here and for the first two days there will be no danger. I don't want you to think it strange if I stop you for a day or two at a time or make you march farther than you would like. I expect to jump an Indian camp and give them hell. Then go on to the Powder River when I will leave you. Keep together for in union there is strength.

In a few days soldiers and immigrants would camp in what is now Stark County.

This is Bicentennial Story No. 10, prepared by Father Louis Pfaller, for the Stark County Historical Society.
