Transcription

Early on the morning of July 26, 1864, General Sully sent scouts north from the Heart River camp to watch for the Sioux. That afternoon he followed with a force of 2500 men, stripped to the most essential gear to ensure a rapid advance. When the force had gone 10 miles north, a Captain of the Nebraska Scouts rode up and breathlessly reported that the other scouts had been cut to pieces by the Indians.

Sully arrested the scout for drunkenness, then sent a force ahead to discover the truth. They found out that near present Antelope the
Army scouts had had a scrape with the Sioux Scouts. An army horse had been wounded and a scout got an arrow in his knee, while the Indians suffered the loss of three horses and their camping equipment.

Fearing that there might be more Sioux in the broken terrain ahead, Sully put the column on fighting alert.

This is Bicentennial Story No. 12, prepared by Father Louis Pfaller, for the Stark County Historical Society.
