Transcription

In the fa11 of 1919 a young lady from Ironwood, Michigan came to western North Dakota for her second year of teaching. Skulda Vanadis Baner got off the train at Belfield and rode out to Gorham with the mailman, Harry Sherman. She boarded with the George Hickey's and taught the Gorham school 1½ miles away. Some of her pupils were John Struchinski, Elwood Hickey, Bertram Johnson and Mary Besaraba Duletski. Following the completion of the school term she returned to Michigan and her first love — writing. Three novels were published, "Latchstring Out", Song of the Lute", and "First Parting", a very entertaining novel about her experiences at Gorham. She lost her eye sight but continued to write many stories which were published in the Ladies Home Journal and other magazines. Miss Baner never returned to Gorham but kept in touch with many of her pupils and friends until her death in 1960.

This is Bicentennial Story No. 150, prepared by Mrs. Elwood Hickey of Belfield.
