The Dorcas Society was organized in 1909 in Dickinson with an order of twelve members. The organization started out with the idea of maintaining a bed in the hospital for poor children under eleven years of age, who required treatment.
It was organized at the home of Mrs. Mona Dow on March 17, 1909. The group's mainstay annual event was the Silver Tea; however, its first effort was a grand charity ball in the old Dickinson Armory shortly after being founded. Net proceeds of $100 were given to the Stein Hospital.
In a published report of its many activities for the year of 1916, various donations of money were given to worthy causes. In the report, 75 families were given some attention of food or clothes. Nels Nichols of Medora donated a carload of coal which was given to needy folk. Total receipts were $347.15 and disbursements of $346.15, signed Florence M. Tollefson, secretary-treasurer.
