The German-Hungarian Club was organized March 12, 1912 as a group of men and women with the purpose of striving for friendship, neighborliness and to aid in times of need. There were 25 founders, but Ludwig Lenhardt and Nick Sauer are traditionally given credit for starting the lodge. The group first met in a tailor shop and a shoemakers shop and then used the dining room of the old German Hotel.
In October 1914, the lodge bought a small house just west of the St. Anthony Club and they used this for 10 years. In 1923 the members bought lots on Broadway for a lodge but it was not until 1949 that the building was begun there. It was occupied that same year.
By 1976, the club building had undergone major additions and renovations, eventually offering large quarters for a dining room, banquets, wedding dances and receptions and a lounge.
