A very early drugstore in Dickinson was started in 1883 by J.J. Freeman, who had a building erected on the present site of Greene Drug, 16 West Villard. He combined the pharmacy and 88 FIRST FEDERAL SAVINGS & LOAN a dry goods business until selling the drugstore section to T.J. Greene shortly after the turn of the century. Greene had previously operated the Sims Street Market.
Greene shared his building first with Freeman's Dry Goods and then the Roquette Brothers department store, later buying out Freeman. In 1916, shortly after incorporating as Greene Drug and Jewelry with V.K. Greene and Eugene Greene as principal stockholders, Eugene assumed full ownership.
On January 4, 1928, Ansul Suckerman and Phil Boise bought Greene Drug and in 1942 Ansul and Jennie Suckerman bought out Boise. At that time, the building also housed Con's Barber Shop and the Midget News stand.
Making up prescriptions at that time was a job that included individually preparing each one, since there were few ready-made medicines. A typical prescription cost 35 or 40 cents.
In 1947 the Suckermans purchased the rest of the building and moved out the barbershop and newsstand, enlarging their store to a 50-foot frontage. Then, in 1963, the old building was razed, and while the Suckermans did a temporary business out of the First National Bank building, a new Greene Drug was built. It included a lunch counter and cosmetics section.
In 1973 Robert and Una Mae Penne bought the store and the Suckermans retired. The lunch counter was replaced by a baby clothes and accessories department. In 1979, Dwight and Vicia Mundy bought the business. The modern-day Greene Drug closed in 2016.
