Transcription

Late on the evening of July 26, 1864, Sully's army of 25 hundred stopped to rest on or near the site of modern Richardton. Alarmed by the skirmish with Indian scouts a few hours before, Sully gave orders that no fires be lighted, that they stay in marching formation, and sleep fully clothed and armed. If any of them attempted to sleep they soon gave up. Soon after the men lay down, the camp guards imagined they heard Indians sneaking into the camp and they hurriedly shook every man, and at the order of "Quick! Quick! Fall in line!" every soldier sprang to his horse. The alarm proved to be false, but the men had been so shaken that few closed their eyes after that. At 2 a.m., they started to get ready for the forced march toward Killdeer Mountain.
