Sully's casualties in the Battle of Killdeer Mountain, July 28, 1864, were five soldiers killed. The Indians had little chance before his devastating cannon shells and they suffered the loss of about 100 killed and hundreds more wounded. The routed Indians fled to the badlands, leaving behind all of their camp equipment. Sully remarked: "I would rather destroy their supplies than kill fifty of their warriors." It was estimated that there were about 15 hundred tepees, with about 200 tons of dried buffalo meat and berries, most of their winter supply of food. At the end of a day, the 700 soldiers sent to destroy the camp needed help from 500 more to complete the destruction. Many of the soldiers had a high old time shooting the 3,000 dogs left behind in the camp.

This is Bicentennial Story No.14, prepared by Father Louis Pfaller, for the Stark County Historical Society.
