Transcription

A scorching sun beat clown on Sully's Column as it fought it's way through the tortuous badlands swarming with Indians, August 8, 1864. There were few casualties, but loss in material was high. The rear guard burned wrecked wagons and their contents and killed exhausted animals lest they be of use to the Indians. The soldiers began to fear that most of their animals would die of starvation and thirst, when about 3 p.m. the advance guard drove away the Indians from a large pond of rainwater at the bottom of a large basin near Flat Top Butte.
The scant water was quickly drained or churned into a muck-hole by the parched men and animals. Many of the belated immigrants and soldiers offered a dollar for a canteen full of the muddy liquid.

This is Bicentennial Story No.20, prepared by Father Louis Pfaller, for the Stark County Historical Society.
