On November 30, 1890 reports of an Indian uprising reached Belfield, and settlers streamed into town for protection. The alarm quickly spread to Dickinson where a mass meeting was held to plan defenses. A delegation was dispatched on the next train to confer with Governor Miller in Bismarck. South Heart and Gladstone were also bestirred, and soon Dickinson and Gladstone organized militia units. On December 12 there was much rejoicing in Dickinson when a special train arrived from the west with troops from Fort Keogh, near Miles City. They found nothing but imaginary Indians besieging the city.

This is Bicentennial Story No. 58, prepared by Father Louis Pfaller for the Stark County Historical Society, Jack Horte at the piano.
