Transcription

When the troops under Captain Fountain and Lt. Ord reached Dickinson on Dec. 12, 1890, they expected to go into battle because the reports that brought the troops had indicated that the Indians were already outside the city. Hysteria had brought many settlers into town, and the troops were needed more to calm the hyperthyroid citizens than to fight imaginary Indians. The troops camped near the stockyards east of Dickinson for a few days, and then moved south to New England where the settlers, under L.M. Griswold had built a small fort for protection. (Those were the days, my friend. I thought they'd never end.)

This is Bicentennial Story No. 59, prepared by Father Louis Pfaller, for the Stark County Historical Society, Jack Hjorte at the piano.
