Wadsworth jury effigy. The Dickinson press., January 11, 1896.png

Title

Hotel de Mores

Description

A copy negative of the Hotel de Mores in Medora with a banner hanging on the side and dummies hanging in a tree.

The second image is a clipping from an issue of The Dickinson press., January 11, 1896 explaining the effigy.

Words on the banner read: "Billings Co.'s Compliments to Burleigh Co.'s Thugs and Packed Juries. Burleigh County the Banner County of Thugs. To the Jurors Hutchinson Et. Al. How Much Did You Get? You Poor Fools. May You Roast In Hell. Hutch How Many False Oaths Did You Take To Get Upon the Jury? You Pimps and Cowards."

Further research has found that this effigy was in regards to the Wadsworth & Roem murder case which happened in 1895-1896. The local people of Billings County were not satisfied with the results of the case letting the Wadsworths go free. The case was tried in Bismarck (Burleigh County) which explains the writing on the banner. 'Hutch' refers to the jury foreman whose name was Hutchinson.
