Transcription

The community of Belfield is preparing to celebrate the Nation's Bicentennial in 1976 with a Centennial celebration honoring the establishment of Camp Houston at the site of the present day Belfield.

In 1876, a United States Army detachment, under the command of Col. Merrill, established Camp Houston and commanded troops here, taking part in the Indian Campaigns.

The early while settlers who arrived here in the 1880's referred to the location as Fort Houston, and some who were children at the time remember playing about the entrenchments of the dismantled Fort.

A map in the 1883 Northern Pacific Railway Directory lists the site of Belfield as Camp Houston.

This is Bicentennial Story No. 139, prepared by Muriel Hurt for the Stark County Historical Society.
