Transcription
On July 1, 1910 some 44 Hollander families arrived via train in Belfield to begin their new lives. The crowd that gathered at the Station saw the unloading of men and women from a foreign land and were confronted with a spectacle not soon forgotten. Children attired in neat frocks, men and women dressed in both western fashion and native costumes greeted the eye.
The Hollanders pitched right in and soon started an experiment station, built homes and started farms. One of the landmarks still remaining of this period is the large house located in the northeast residential section built for and used by Lord Wm. Cobius, a nobleman, and the instigator of the Dakota-Holland Land Co. This home is presently owned by Phil Kessel.
This is Bicentennial Story No. 144, prepared by Muriel Hurt for the Stark County Historical Society.
