Southwest North Dakota Oral History Map

This project represents an effort to consolidate stories from oral histories about life in southwestern North Dakota. Recorded oral histories are scattered in collections across the state, including the Stark County Historical Society, Digital Horizons (online), and the German from Russia Heritage Collection (GRHC) at North Dakota State University. The map will continue to be built out as more oral histories are added.

The link below will take you to audio excerpts from some of these oral histories. These excerpts are linked to a geographical location on a map. In addition to the excerpt itself, you will find a link to the repository or collection where you can find the complete oral history and, in some cases, an image (also linked) associated with the story being told.

For best functionality: use  the Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, or Microsoft Edge web browsers; it does not work well with Apple’s Safari browser.

To use the map:

  • Click on the link above.
  • On the map, individual sites are signified by a red marker. A yellow or green numbered circle means that there are that many sites in an area, and clicking on those numbered circles will zoom in to that location.
  • Click on the red markers to see a popup to listen to clips of related stories or to find out more.
  • Some markers also contain photographs. Clicking on the photograph will take you to the source of the image.

IMPORTANT: the project covers a large portion of southwestern North Dakota. Use the +/- or the scroll wheel on your mouse to zoom in or out and see all the sites.

This project was supported with a Cultural Heritage Grant given to the Southwestern North Dakota Museum Foundation. Much of the work was done by faculty and students associated with the University of Wisconsin.
