Transcription
The ambitious city of Bismarck bedecked itself proudly when ex-president Ulysses S. Grant came to attend the laying of the cornerstone of the new territorial capitol. The date was September 5, 1883, and many prominent citizens and high officials came from the East for the occasion.
One young wife, to make things more attractive, bought three bushels of apples at a store and tied apple after apple to the branches of a young tree in her yard. The Bismarck men who were hosting the ex-president made sure that his party would notice. "What do you think of this for a fruit-growing country?" he was asked. "Magnificent," Grant replied. "I am surprised, wonderfully surprised!"
