Transcription

R.S. Brookings, a surveyor for the Northern Pacific, considered the Young Man's Butte stage station the finest ranch location in the area. He bought the land, called it the Oakdale Farm, and raised Percheron horses. Milton Bobb of Taylor recalls Brookings showing him around the ranch headquarters, pointing out rifle pits and many arrows scattered about, evidence that the station had once suffered Indian raids. Brookings also pointed out to Bobb the graves of two men killed by the Indians and buried in the corral. Roy Gress later bought the farm from Brookings and he found an empty trunk buried near the springs-- probably a treasure buried in haste and later reclaimed.

This is Bicentennial Story No. 28, prepared by Father Louis Pfaller, for the Stark County Historical Society.
