On November 17, 1890, the depot agent at New Salem caused a panic by spreading the news that 150 Indians were about to attack the settlements. The farmers flocked to New Salem and Sims, drilled with sticks for guns, and telegraphed the State Militia for arms. At Blue Grass the people also constructed a fort, while at Glen Ullin the people frantically threw up earthen breastworks by moonlight and quickly organized a militia company, complete with a surgeon, quartermaster and chaplains. But the people of Hebron "took the cake" in constructing Fort Sauerkraut. More on that tomorrow.
