Transcription

The railway survey of 1871 listed the present Dickinson area as Pleasant Valley, but when the townsite was platted in September 1882, it was named Dickinson in honor of Wells S. Dickinson, who then managed the railroad lands in the area and owned much of the townsite. The streets and avenues were all named, such as Sims, Hannaford, Oaks, Billings, Barnes and Taylor, all of which have been dropped, except Sims and Villard. Since the townsite was then in Morton County, the plat was filed at Mandan on January 3, 1883. In the early days Dickinson was the central point for shipment of buffalo hides and bones. It has developed into the center of a large area of ranching, coal mining, oil wells and light manufacturing.

This is Bicentennial Story No. 33, prepared by Fred Corkery for the Stark County Historical Society.
