Transcription

Dickinson's first school district was a large one. On July 10, 1883, the county commissioners set up four school districts, and the Dickinson district included everything west to Montana, south to present South Dakota, and north to the Little Missouri. They appointed a school board made up of C.H. Klinefelter, Charles H. Merry and B.F.Fowler. On August 25 the Commissioners sent the following notice to the new appointees: "Members of the board will please qualify and be ready for business. The object of calling this meeting is to appoint or elect or choose a District clerk, secure a schoolroom, employ a teacher and to transact any other business that may come before the board." The three appointees met on September 5, 1883, and began to set up a school system for Dickinson.

This is Bicentennial Story No. 38, prepared by Jim Randall, for the Stark County Historical Society.
