Transcription
The first land in what is now Stark County was surveyed in the summer of 1880, preceding even the construction of the railroad. The lands near the railroad route were mainly surveyed in 1881 and 1882. Survey of the county as a whole was largely completed by 1892, though it took until 1896 to finish some of the outlying townships. Notable among the old time surveyors was James G. Saunders, later to become prominent in Gladstone and Dickinson. Lawton Osborne, Sr., of Dickinson is a grandson of Saunders. Surveyors Edwin H. Van Antwerp and Rufus S. Brookings, who subdivided many of the townships of the county later settled near Richardton.
