Transcription

My father, Walter R. Veigel did extensive surveying work for the General Land Office between 1892 and 1912. In 1892 he came from Minnesota as a employee of George K. Dike, who had a contract in that year to mark the boundaries of the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation. There was much more surveying to do in outlying districts of North Dakota, so he stayed and made a career of it. With Dickinson as his base, he surveyed borders and subdivided townships from the Turtle Mountains on the Canadian border to the South Dakota in Grant, Adams, and Bowman counties. By 1912 the entire State had been subdivided, a work that had begun 40 years before in the Red River Valley. I am proud that my father was a pioneer surveyor.

This is Bicentennial Story No. 43, prepared by L.W. Veigel, for the Stark County Historical Society.
