Transcription

In the Spring of 1886, cowboys Billy Newberry and Knute Gibson robbed the Northern Pacific train at Richardton and rode off with $60,000. In Dickinson, Sheriff Jerry Hayes gathered a posse and pursued the robbers to the banks of the flooding Cannonball. Gibson looked at the grinding blocks of ice boiling down the swollen stream and decided to surrender. But Newberry plunged in, got to the other side, and escaped. Two years later he was caught in New Mexico. It seems he had written to some girl and she tipped off the authorities for the reward. Newberry was brought back and given 15 years in the Bismarck Penitentiary.

This is Bicentennial Story No. 52, prepared by Father Louis Pfaller, for the Stark County Historical Society.
