Transcription

The early boom of settlement in Stark County in the 1880's gave way to a period of little growth. Reverses caused some to leave, in fact. Then in the 90's and early 1900's came a new wave of immigration which soon outnumbered the early groups of Yankees, Irish, Germans and Norwegians. Germans from Russia came principally to Richardton and Dickinson. Hungarian Germans settled mostly south of the Heart River, Czechs came to Dickinson, Hollanders to South Heart, Ukrainians and Poles to Belfield, and a colony of French settled at Gaylord. And each ethnic group enriched the county with unique and distinctive customs.

This is Bicentennial Story No. 51, prepared by Father Louis Pfaller, for the Stark County Historical Society.
