Transcription

When General Phil Sheridan visited Fort Rice in Dakota, each company of the post chose one of its sergeants to compete for the honor of being orderly for the famous General. The officer of the day narrowed the competition to two who seemed to be equally perfect in attire. Unable to reach a decision by outward appearances, the officer ordered them to remove their clothes, piece by piece. Piece by piece they both met the most detailed army regulations---until they got down to the socks. One of them had on socks made by his mother, and so was eliminated, but Sargeant Ralph Donath, walking in regulation socks, won the honor of waiting on rough and ready Phil Sheridan.

This is Bicentennial Story No. 110, prepared by Father Louis Pfaller for the Stark County Historical Society.
