Preceding the election of November, 1916, a committee made up of W.L. Richards, Judge Maser, T.D. Casey, Ed Hughes and George Senour collected more than $3,500 in Dickinson to carry on a state-wide campaign for voters' approval of a state college in Dickinson.
George S. Keniston of Bismarck was engaged as a full-time campaign director with a staff of stenographers and typists which reached 12 members. Among present Dickinson residents who worked in Keniston's office are Mrs. Laura Chernasek, Mrs. Vernon McCutchan, and Ward Johnson. E.L. Peterson took charge of promotion among the state's newspapers. In all, the promoters distributed more than two million pieces of advertising material and mailed more than 200,000 letters to voters across the state.
