Transcription

Did you know that there once was a Ukraina, N.D.? It was located eleven miles north and four miles east of Belfield, N.D. at what was then the heart of the Ukrainian settlement.

Not long after St. Demetrius Ukrainian Catholic Church was built in 1906, Mike Bilynsky established a grocery store nearby. Later a new store building was built by Nick and Pete Strilezuk. But it was through the efforts of Jae Malkowski that a post office was established. Mr. Malkowski's desire was to develop here in the newly adopted land, a village modeled after the villages of Ukraine. But the establishment of rural routes caused the post office to close. However, Ukraine continued to be a religious center until the late 1940s.

This is Bicentennial Story No. 132, prepared by Ben Makaruk for the Stark County Historical Society.
