Transcription

Mike Baranko was one of the earliest Ukrainians to settle north of Belfield. He left the Austrian-occupied part of the Ukraine to escape compulsory military training. After his escape he traveled through France, Spain, and Portugal. At a Portuguese port he stowed away in a ship and reached the States in 1896, He worked on a ranch near Richardton for a year, earning the enormous sum of eight dollars. He then homesteaded about 15 miles north of Belfield. Many Ukrainian families joined him in the Gorham and Fairfield communities. Mike died on his farm in 1951.
