Transcription
Who were the earliest of the Ukrainian pioneers to settle in Stark and Billings Counties? The very first was Mike Baranko who filed a claim north of Belfield in 1897. The next year he was joined by Nick Kordon and John Nameniuk; and in 1900 the Nick Evoniuk family homesteaded in the Gorham area. In 1902 Elkow Anheluk filed on his homestead, and in 1904 John Ewoniuk and his son, John Jr., joined the pioneer Ukrainians. Then came John Fedora, Metro Palaniuk, Steve Oleksiew, Steve Anheluk, John Rodakowski, John Chruszch, Jim Fedora, Wallace and Pete Haniuk, and George Klym. These were the earliest, and many more followed.
