Chaplains were not always available on the military posts in early Dakota. Libby, the Wife of General George A. Custer, recalled that at Fort Abraham Lincoln "on Sunday our only services most of the time was to meet together and sing hymns: In our little circle of forty, many denominations were represented, but all knew the old-time hymns." This was to be of much comfort to them, when the worried ladies at Fort Lincoln gathered at the Custer House on Sunday, June 25, 1876, to seek solace in their favorite hymns. "All were absorbed in the same thoughts," recalled Mrs. Custer---how were their husbands who had gone out on an expedition against the Sioux. On that very day, 26 of the ladies became widows as the Sioux triumphed in the Battle of the Little Big Horn.

This is Bicentennial Story No. 120, prepared by Father Louis Pfaller for the Stark County Historical Society.
