The first recorded drilling of an oil well in Stark County was the F.A. Fisher No. 1, in Section 11, Township 137, Range 98. Drilling began on July 6, 1953 and went to a depth of 10,480 feet but proved to be a dry hole.
The first producing well in the County was the R.E. Newton No. 1, in Section 31, Township 140, Range 99. The well was started on July 21, 1954 and was completed two months later, on September 20.
As of May 9, 1975 there have been 183 permits to drill issued in. Stark County, five of which have not been completed and two were canceled. Of the 176 wells completed, 69 became producing wells, and currently
58 of them are still producing.
To January 1, 1975, 11,201,105 barrels of oil had been produced in Stark County.
