Who was it who made the first suggestion that a higher education institution be established at Dickinson? The answer is open to speculation. According to an undated newspaper clipping in the Maude Klinefelter Scrapbook, which is now in the DSC Library, it was Peter J. Berg, the superintendent of schools in Dickinson from 1906 to 1938. According to a DSTC Quarterly Bulletin of September 1942, it was M. L. McBride, a Dickinson attorney campaigning for the State Senate in 1912. He is supposed to have made the suggestion at a meeting of the Daglum Coffee Club in June of that year. At that same gathering, H. C. Berry, a candidate for the State House of Representatives, also urged establishment of such an institution and further suggested that its location be in Dickinson. Fred Maser, then a candidate for judge of Stark County, was also present and discussed the advantages of Dickinson as a proposed location.
