Transcription

John Fedora was typical of the hardy Ukrainians who settled North of Belfield. When he came in 1906 he had nothing to work with in farming. So he dug a hole in the ground, covered it with brush and this was the first home for this young man and his new bride. Early each Monday he walked 20 miles to Belfield, worked all week as a section hand on the railroad, and on Saturday hiked back to his lonely wife. Little by little they earned enough to build a sod house, buy a horse, a plow, a cow and a wagon. Half a century later he and many others like him were able to retire with enough to live comfortably the rest of their lives.

This is Bicentennial Story No. 91, prepared by Eleanor Johnson for the Belfield News.
